PROPERTIES, ACTIVITIES, AND MORE

Located in the central part of the state, Lake Martin is one of the largest man-made lakes in the United States. The lake is a reservoir formed by the construction of Martin Dam in a gorge on the Tallapoosa River. Completed in 1926, the dam was originally known as Cherokee Bluffs for the geological formation upon which it was built, and at the time of its construction, it was the largest man-made lake in the world. Lake Martin offers a wide variety of outdoor activities both in and out of the water. Its 44,000 acres of water cover parts of Tallapoosa, Coosa and Elmore Counties. Alabama Power Company and Russell Lands own the majority of the 750 miles of shoreline, but multiple opportunities exist for both building and buying homes.

In addition to boating, skiing, fishing and golfing, Lake Martin is a popular camping area and is home to the Dixie Sailing Club. Each year Lake Martin hosts multiple fishing tournaments, the Fourth of July Fireworks, the AquaPalooza boating event, and the Alexander City Jazz Festival, a June event that includes live entertainment in downtown Alex City and at the Lake Martin Amphitheater. The lake has many eagle nests, natural sand beaches, great restaurants, several marinas, and accessible islands as well as numerous landmarks such as Kowaliga Bridge and Chimney Rock. Its proximity to Auburn University makes the Lake Martin area popular with Tiger fans of football, baseball, basketball and other collegiate sports. And, of course, and perhaps best of all, the lake delivers an extraordinary sunrise and sunset every day! Lake Martin is the South’s Best Kept Secret!
