Lake Martin Area Schools and Colleges

Despite its rural location, Lake Martin has extraordinary educational opportunities for children and students of all ages. Local schools boast outstanding academic records, above average rankings on standardized tests and high graduation rates. They are also proud that a significant percentage of graduates go to college. High school AP classes allow a student to earn college credits, and seniors may opt for dual enrollment through an arrangement with the Central Alabama Community College that makes courses available on campus and online.

As is typical in the South, sports play a primary role in local schools. Many different sports programs are available to both boys and girls including football (of course!), basketball, softball, soccer, track, tennis, golf, and swimming. The three local high schools routinely lead their division in all sports, and local athletics are frequent recipients of athletic scholarships to southeastern colleges and universities.

Alexander City has established the Alexander City Schools Education Foundation (ACSEF), which secures resources for local schools from individuals, corporations, and foundations. Recently ACSEF upgraded the computers and software in all five Alexander City schools, and foreign language and fine arts programs have been added to school curricula and tutors have been hired by ACSEF. Next steps include providing iPads for all students in Benjamin Russell High School and Alexander City Middle School. The iPad technology will be integrated into the elementary schools’ instruction process as well, and a thirty-unit mobile iPad lab is planned for each grade at the three elementary schools.

High quality, licensed daycare, and pre-school programs are readily available. Programs are typically licensed and most teachers are certified in early childhood development. Numerous faith-based programs are available. Some programs offer a progressive curriculum, while others provide a more relaxed approach. These programs are both affordable and reliable.
